 WHAT'S THE WORD?

If you think, in your secretest thoughts, that what you do is actually quite probably a pile of lies, crap and evasions, at best an entertaining farce and at worst a ghastly satire starring you as yourself, it is likely, is it not, that after a while, without even noticing it, you will start, in your innermost halls of internal judgement, in the silent places that you only go to when you cannot sleep at three a.m., to think that maybe you yourself too are nothing but a pile of lies, crap and evasions.

And it is a lot harder to laugh about it at three a.m. when you cannot sleep than it is in the pub with your friends. When it is three a.m. and you cannot sleep, when your plumbing creaks and your wiring hums and every slamming car door is a gunshot, a certain ironic distance and a certain supposed distinction are not really much of a consolation.
